Jerry L. Thompson, a student of Evans’s who became his protégé and unofficial caretaker, recalled the photographer’s morning routine:
Walker always had trouble, when I knew him, getting out of the house before afternoon. He would wake up, have breakfast, go back to bed, get up again, then go about the business of getting dressed. He encountered numerous distractions on the way to getting ready for the day.
